Annual refill frequency was calculated using actual product consumption and the capacity of each dispensing system. Refill time was then applied to the number of required refill events to estimate annual servicing time per restroom. Results were normalized using equivalent product consumption to account for differences in restroom usage and volume. Annual labor savings represent the difference in estimated servicing time between UNICORN’s cartridge-based system and traditional commercial dispensing systems.
Applied case study: This 15-hour annual per-restroom benchmark was applied to a Fortune 500 financial-services office in New York City to estimate projected labor savings based on the number of restrooms using UNICORN and the length of the implementation period. Methodology: As part of UNICORN’s cross-sectional study across 365 restrooms at five partner organizations over a one-year period, we analyzed period product consumption and compared UNICORN with traditional commercial dispensing systems using equivalent product consumption. Excess packaging from each dispensing solution was physically weighed, and the total packaging weight was divided by the number of period products represented to calculate excess packaging per piece. Results were normalized on a per-product basis to allow equivalent comparisons across systems with different capacities, packaging formats, and consumption volumes.
Accessibility and placement
Where should period product dispensers be installed? UNICORN's approach is to place period products inside every restroom stall, where they are actually needed. Someone who discovers they need a period product after entering a stall may otherwise need to leave the stall, find a product elsewhere in the restroom and return. In-stall access removes that additional step. UNICORN calls this principle Every Stall Accessibility: period products should be considered at the point of need as part of modern restroom design.
Is a period product dispenser required by the ADA?: The ADA does not specifically require period products to be provided or period product dispensers to be installed inside every stall. However, fixed dispensers in accessible spaces may need to comply with applicable requirements involving reach ranges, clear floor space, operable parts, and accessible restroom layouts. UNICORN recommends evaluating dispenser placement in the context of the applicable ADA Standards and individual restroom design.
